The average age of five emplyees at a local bank is 38 years. The age of four of the five employees is 19, 28, 62, and 51 years. What is the age of the fifth person?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My understanding is that the average of something should be the sum of all numbers and than divide for the "number of numbers". But here one is missing, and I cannot figure out how to get there. Dummy me.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

where did you get 179?

OpenStudy (uri):

@phi help him please.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the final response can only be 30 or 38.

Nnesha (nnesha):

the answer is 30 so when you add all five numbers and divide by 5 you get 38 which is you average :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How would you have got there, if you didn't know that one of the possible response were 30? :) Thanks, though!

Nnesha (nnesha):

because there is five numbers i did the backward i multiply 38 by 5 ( 38 average and five numbers) i get 190 and the gave me 4 numbers and there sum is 160 so i subtract 190 with 160 and i get 30 so then i add 4 numbers with 30 and divide by 5 i get 38 so i know 30 is a answer :) :}

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Brilliant! Thank you!

Nnesha (nnesha):
