y=2x-2, 5x+y=5

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

y = 2x - 2 --- so sub 2x - 2 in for y in the other equation 5x + y = 5 5x + (2x - 2) = 5 --- add 2 to both sides 5x + 2x = 5 + 2 -- combine like terms 7x = 7 --- divide both sides by 7 x = 1 now we will sub 1 in for x in either equation to find y y = 2x - 2 y = 2(1) - 2 y = 2 - 2 y = 0 we can then check our answers by subbing them back into either equation 5x + y = 5 5(1) + 0 = 5 5 = 5 (correct) x = 1 and y = 0 or (1,0)
