Solution set for |2x - 9| = -18

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

hint: absolute value represents distance

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ik I got 2x - 9 = -18 2x = -9 x = 4.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that right?

OpenStudy (phi):

there is a problem. anything inside the absolute value sign is made *positive* and a positive number can never by equal to -18

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the left side will never equal a negative number because absolute value is never negative ex: |x| = -3 is impossible because |x| is either 0 or positive
