He preserved more than 200 million acres of public land. He established the nation's first wildlife refuge at Pelican Island, Florida. He doubled the number of national parks in the Untied States. Roosevelt used the Antiquities Act to create national monuments instead. In this way, he preserved the Grand Canyon and the Petrified Forest in Arizona. He spoke of the glories of the Grand Canyon while visiting the site of 1903.
