Someone help with this question please :) Hayden is a manager at a landscaping company. He has 3 workers to landscape an entire park, Cody, Kaitlyn, and Joseph. Cody can complete the project in 8 hours. Kaitlyn can complete the project in 6 hours. Joseph is new, so no one knows how long it will take him. Hayden assigns all of them to complete the park together. Explain to Hayden how this project can tell him how long it would take Joseph to complete the project if he worked by himself. Use complete sentences.
I know that I start off with 1/8 + 1/6 + 1/x = 1/y but I'm not sure what to do after and how to deal with the y.
Well, you don't actually have to set up the whole problem because in order to find the answer for how long it takes Joseph to do the job on his own, you need to know how long it takes all 3 of them to do the job together. That answer replaces your y. Then when you have that y, you solve for x. See that?
You only are told to explain how you would find out how long it takes Joseph to do the job on his own, you weren't actually told to solve it. You can't, anyways, unless you know how long it takes for them to all 3 do the ob together.
yeah okay
See that? Hayden will have to have the 3 work together in order to solve this problem.
Right, I see, so how would I solve for x?
Let me ask you something...do you see a number in my SmartScore circle? All I'm seeing is a solid orange circle.
Yeah, I see that too. Just an orange circle
Once you know how long it takes for the 3 to do the job together, replace y with that number. Say it takes 7 hours. Set up the equation like this then:|dw:1411354917718:dw|
