What was integral to the spread of Enlightenment from Europe to America

There are many integral pieces for the spread of the Enlightenment from Europe to America, however the number one piece is the printing press or the ability to be literate. The main reason people came to America from the start was to escape religious persecution being carried out by England, etc. When religious groups which were being prosecuted had made it safely to America the first thing they did was try to make everyone literate. The Puritans is one group which we have empirical evidence of that they did this. They did this so that people could protect themselves from sin. Thanks to this, the literacy rate in America was high, and with this people could read books and newspapers in which spread the Enlightenment.
