last one :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

last one of the night:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jim_thompson5910 hello there, do you know how to do this one?:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@satellite73

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:(

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

hmm definitely a pain because there are many instances of the chain rule being used here still doable though

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

were you able to get anywhere with this one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not at all, i don't know how two start it....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but its fine i have a 93% and thats like my lowest grade, so i should be good:)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

no we can get it done

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you sure? sounds like its going to be a pain!!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

ok we have this function \[\Large f(x) = \sqrt{7 + \sqrt{8+\sqrt{x}}}\]

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yeah I'm sure

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

let's make \[\Large g(x) = \sqrt{8+\sqrt{x}}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you:)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

and we'll also let \[\Large h(x) = \sqrt{x}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so what we have, in a simplified sense is this \[\Large f(x) = \sqrt{7 + g(x)}\] where \[\Large g(x) = \sqrt{8+\sqrt{x}}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that looks way nicer, okay & from then :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

taking the derivative of both sides, and using the chain rule gives us \[\Large f(x) = \sqrt{7 + g(x)}\] \[\Large f^{\prime}(x) = \frac{1}{2\sqrt{7 + g(x)}}*g^{\prime}(x)\]

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so we'll need to find the derivative of g(x) and as we go deeper and deeper into this function, we will need the derivative of h(x) as well

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ahhhhh i don't like this at all lol but okay, okay!!!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

\[\Large g(x) = \sqrt{8+h(x)}\] \[\Large g^{\prime}(x) = \frac{1}{2\sqrt{8+h(x)}}*h^{\prime}(x)\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i clearly see how you are getting the derivatives now :) i get some wrong, but I'm getting there

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what is h ' (x) ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1/2x

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

not quite

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-^1/2 because of the sqr

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

oh ok

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

good

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

to the -1/2 power

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes!:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that derivative was easy thats why lol

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so \[\Large g(x) = \sqrt{8+h(x)}\] \[\Large g^{\prime}(x) = \frac{1}{2\sqrt{8+h(x)}}*h^{\prime}(x)\] \[\Large g^{\prime}(x) = \frac{1}{2\sqrt{8+h(x)}}*\frac{1}{2\sqrt{x}}\]

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

with me so far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay yes!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait one question!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no nevermine i see it

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you sure?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i did some studying last night, I'm following :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

\[\large f^{\prime}(x) = \frac{1}{2\sqrt{7 + g(x)}}*g^{\prime}(x)\] \[\large f^{\prime}(x) = \frac{1}{2\sqrt{7 + g(x)}}*\frac{1}{2\sqrt{8+h(x)}}*\frac{1}{2\sqrt{x}}\] and you can see that this is rather ugly even when we've made the substitutions for g(x) and h(x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay yes, i wouldn't be ready to approach this problem bymyself....

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

but let's finish this off \[\large f^{\prime}(x) = \frac{1}{2\sqrt{7 + g(x)}}*\frac{1}{2\sqrt{8+h(x)}}*\frac{1}{2\sqrt{x}}\] \[\large f^{\prime}(x) = \frac{1}{2\sqrt{7 + \sqrt{8+\sqrt{x}}}}*\frac{1}{2\sqrt{8+\sqrt{x}}}*\frac{1}{2\sqrt{x}}\] and that should do it in terms of finding the derivative, but you could probably rewrite/rearrange a few terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, yes sounds good to me!! Thank you so much again for all your help!!!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

let's hope the system accepts it. We both know how picky it is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes thats the only thing that sucks:( let me try it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

guess what:)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yay it worked. I was fearing it was gonna reject it or something

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, you're an amazing math tutor, you and web assign are like best friends!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeayy:) you're seriously the best, both you and @satellite73 help me a lot!!! Hope to one day be able to help as much as you guys help me:)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome and I'm sure you'll be able to help either one of us with topics we don't know (maybe in chem or something, I'm horrible with that lol)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i'll be more than glad to help you in Chem!! :D i love it, i even have a periodic shirt that i wear when i feel like a genius in my lab/work lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when will you be taking a chem class? & which one? i haven't taken Biochemistry, thats the last chemistry i need! but i'll be taking it in 2 semesters

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so it sounds like you're a chem major? or you've taken a lot of chem classes?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Probably next semester, but not sure yet

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep.... Molecular & Cellular Biochemistry major lol I also love Biology, thats my other job, i tutor at a community college for biology, microbiology & micro & disease

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so if you ever need science help let me know, i'll give you my email so when I'm not logged on into "open study" i'll still be available!:)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

very impressive, all of that is in very high demand these days, so it's definitely a smart path to take

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not as impressive as your math skills! You know everything!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

I wish lol

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

but thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, I'm serious!! You really are impressive! well at least to me if you don't believe it lol

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

random question: it says "watch it" on your hw problem http://assets.openstudy.com/updates/attachments/5420f239e4b0389f936ce787-liz_mustang-1411445331234-screenshot20140922at10.06.21pm.png and I wonder if they show you step by step how to solve? or is it a similar example?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

thanks, I appreciate the compliment

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my laptop won't open any pop ups actually so i couldn't tell you lol, i can try it tomorrow my schools computerl!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or adobe flashback something

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when i click it

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

i see, my guess is that it's a similar problem unless you somehow connect with a tutor on the site

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i will actually try it tomorrow, how does web assign work does it have it's own tutors?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

I'm not sure. I've never worked with it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this comes out every time i try it

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

possibly a missing plugin?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

definitely odd and frustrating, but oh well

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i've tried that too... lol i'll see if it does that with the school computers i'll leave it, but if it works i'll hunt my laptop down until it works lol

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

that sounds like a good set of plans

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Goodnight, thank you for your help!!, i will be going to bed now, i have class at 7:00 am:(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hope you have a nice day at school tomorrow!! study hard, oh wait you don't need to study you know it ALL :) lol

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

lol thanks and good night. That sucks on the early class, but you'll make it through
