OpenStudy (eric_d):

Why it's 2mv ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

if you're going in east direction at velolcity `v`, hit a wall and reverse the direction, we can say your new velocity is `-v` yes ?

OpenStudy (eric_d):

|dw:1411464077332:dw| like this

OpenStudy (eric_d):

So, to find the change in momentum, I'll need to find the difference between those two..

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Exactly ! you are hitting the wall with velocity `v` and the wall is sending you back with the same speed, so ur velocity while coming back would be `-v`

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

yes the name says so : `change` in momentum

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

momentum before hitting the wall : `mv` momentum after hitting the wall : `-mv`
