6. All angles in the figure below are right angles. What is the area of the figure? A. 14 B. 18 C. 28 D. 36

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its up there

OpenStudy (phi):

if there was no "cut out" in the big rectangle, what would its area be ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

18?

OpenStudy (phi):

what is width*height for the big rectangle (assume it is whole with no cut out)

OpenStudy (triciaal):

two approaches 1. find the area of the rectangle and subtract the missing area 2. break the figure up in 3 sections find the areas and add them up

OpenStudy (anonymous):

45

OpenStudy (phi):

yes, 45 but there is a cut out. we need to find its area. height is 3 we need its width. we can figure out its width because the bottom side of the big rectangle is the same length as its top, i.e. 9 what is the width of the cut out?
