A 2 mile cab ride costs $5.25. A 5 mile cab ride costs $10.50. How much does a 3.8 mile cab ride costs?

OpenStudy (popitree):

say for cab there are 2 charges, 1 u can say initial charge or something else.. that is constant (a).. the other part depend on how far u go, consider it as linear function. so, a+2x = 5.25, a+5x=10.50, now solve for a and x, then calculate for 3.8mile journey

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first divide $10.50 by 5, which gives you $2.10($2.10 is how much it cost per mile), then multiply 2.10 by 3.8 and you get $7.89.
