I will give a medal to anyone who helps with this one question! The length of a rectangle is 12 in. more than its width. The perimeter is 64 in. What is the length of the rectangle?
No, your not gonna help?
This is a system of equations. You have to choose two variables to represent anything you don't know. In this case, you do not know the length and width. For concvinence sake let us say that that l is the length.
Then the width is w. So then we translate the words into an equation.
So the equation is \[l=12+w\] and the perieter
Now the formula of perimeter is two times length plus two times width and we know th perimeter is 64. So \[64=2l+2w\]
Now we can use any method to solve this system for l. Once we know l, we know the length. My method to solve it would be the substitution method. Since we are looking to solve for l, we should replace w with 12-l. This is because \[l=12+w\]\[w=l-12\] The substitution goes like this \[64=2l+2(l-12)\] Then we solve for l and you have the length.
