Would you solve the equation 0.25x+7=1/3x-8 using fractions or decimals? Explain.

OpenStudy (triciaal):

I would use fractions

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And why fractions?

OpenStudy (triciaal):

more precise do not have to adjust for same number of decimal places

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Whichever one popped first into my head. The ONLY real consideration is Significant Digits. If something says, 0.142857, I would be REALLY tempted to use 1/7, but that would mean that I just moved from 6 significant figures to exact values. That may or may not be the right things to do. In this case, with that 1/3 in there, I would be most tempted to use fractions. Converting 1/3 to a decimal isn't exactly possible. We WILL introduce some inaccuracy when we truncate it to 0.3333333, or 0.3333333333333333333333, 0.33, or whatever.

OpenStudy (triciaal):

easier to work with

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OHHH. Okay I get it now, thanks (:

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

If you MUST use a calculator, because someone demands it, well, the fractions might be easier. Tough call. Have to make a gametime decision. :-)
