9x-3(x+8)= ? The left hand side simplifies to 9x - 3x - 24 = 6x - 24 If you make the right hand side 6x - 24, then it is no longer an equation that works only for one x value. Instead it becomes an identity which is true for ANY value of x because the left and the right side are one and the same expression, just simplified a bit on the right. So if RHS is 6x - 24, the equation will have infinite number of solutions because any x value will satisfy the equation.
