What resources helped Africans build the early kingdoms of East, Central, and South Africa?

Anywhere around 200 BCE and 1400 CE, I know, its a loooong time. :p

Well. the south I'm assuming would be due to its vast accesability to the water.
the east would be due to its close proximity to middle eastern civilization
and central i would assume for vast open hunting land. Sorry I'm not good at African history >~>
