Why is argon used in light bulbs ? In terms of electronic structure

Ar gas provides an inert atmosphere thus it helps preserve the metal filaments for longer, i.e. extends lifetime.

Ar is inert because it has a full valence shell (of electrons) and will not bind or oxidize other molecules at normal conditions.
