Why doesn't a speedometer measure a car's velocity?

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Velocity is a vector quantity and is measured by both speed and direction. A speedometer can only measure speed. It can not measure direction. Also when the direction or speed changes the velocity changes. For future reference. I answered this post when it was asked.I am deleting my previous replies to lose the 3 medals so I can go back down to 98.
