sub in 1/2y - 3 in for x in the other equation

4(1/2y - 3) - y = 10 -- distribute through the parenthesis
2y - 12 - y = 10 -- add 12 to both sides
2y - y = 10 + 12 -- combine like terms
y = 22

now sub 22 in for y in either equation to fidn x
x = 1/2y - 3
x = 1/2(22) - 3
x = 11 - 3
x = 8

check..
4x - y = 10
4(8) - 22 = 10
32 - 22 = 10
10 = 10 (correct)

so x = 8 and y = 22
