what is a "thesis"

and how do i come up with one?

Well than you just have to write a statement about the Differences between the United States History in the years of 1776 and 1870. You can also search Google for examples of a thesis and that should give you some ideas, also if you have a History book you can look in there for information. :)

Oh okay and that should be a fine topic because your talking about the topic they gave you, and once you devolpe the thesis I think you should be fine

In a thesis statement you:
Take a stand!! State your opinion.
Map out your paper!! Make sure the reader will know what you are going to talk about.
ANSWER THE QUESTION ASKED.
*Usually the last sentence in the first paragraph of your essay*

Examples:

"Weak thesis statement:

India has a lot of interesting festivals.
The statement is too broad--the writer can't discuss all Indian festivals. Even though it does state the writer's opinion, the statement is not clear: it doesn't explain why the festivals are interesting.

Strong thesis statement:

Diwali is an important festival for Indians because they celebrate, remember traditional legends, and enjoy time with their families."

I would also like to add that most statements are written as like one sentence or so, but a really advanced and good thesis statement should be about a paragraph.
