Wendy played her favorite video game for 8 hours last week. Today, Wendy's parents restricted her to 6 hours each week for the next 9 weeks. Create the function, f(x), that models Wendy's total video game time, and explain what each number in the situation represents graphically, using complete sentences.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what does x represent?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

any ideas?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh umm how many hours? Really unsure about this.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

x is the number of weeks actually

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

let's start at the top: "Wendy played her favorite video game for 8 hours last week" so far, she's only played 8 hours

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

"Today, Wendy's parents restricted her to 6 hours each week for the next 9 weeks" how many more hours does she play for 1 week?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh right! Sorry, multitasking with problems. Six?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes, so we have this amount total 8 + 6

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

in week 2, we have 8 + 6*2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

in week x, we have 8 + 6*x

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

You can rearrange that to get y = 6x + 8 the function is f(x) = 6x + 8

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

plug in x = 0 and you'll see that f(x) is 8 plug in x = 1 and you'll see that f(x) is 14 etc etc so it fits the model

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, what would x represent?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

I stated that above

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, my mistake! Thank you so much! Would you mind helping me with one more?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

sure, go ahead
