In a pig race, your pig gets a headstart of 3 feet running at a rate of 2 feet per second. Your friend's pig is running at a rate of 2 feet per second. A system of linear equations that represents this situation is y= 2x+3 and y=2x. Will your friend's pig catch up to your pig? explain.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they will never catch .. because both have same speed.. 2 feet per second .. but my pig gets a headstart of 3 feet .. which means he is already ahead of 3 feet when the race starts.. so my friend's pig will never catch up my pig..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

did you get my point.?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Your pig will win. You can verify this both graphically and algebraically. If two line share the same slope, then they are parallel and will never cross. Also, try to solve this equation by setting them equal to each other and try to solve. It can't be done.

OpenStudy (ineedhelpfast12):

wait but how do you get that? I tried verifying it algebraically, and my answer was that they will meet. Where did I go wrong?

OpenStudy (ineedhelpfast12):

Oh! now I get it. thans @Techworm
