WILL GIVE MEDAL! A rectangular garden next to a building is to be fenced on three sides. Fencing for the side parallel to the building costs $80 per foot, and material for the other two sides costs $60 per foot. If $2,400 is to be spent on fencing, what are the dimensions of the garden with the largest possible area? _______ feet (parallel side) _______ feet (other sides)

OpenStudy (stefrheart):

You need to interpret what they gave you into a question lets say the parallel sides are X and the other sides are Y now each parallel side is $80 per foot so: 80x now every other side is $60 per foot so: 60y The total is $2400 so combine all the numbers and equal it to 2400 80x+60y=2400

OK. Should I solve for y?

OpenStudy (stefrheart):

and x

OpenStudy (stefrheart):

also there is another equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How so?

OpenStudy (stefrheart):

because there is only 3 sides that are going to be accounted for

what is it?
