Using the fact that the angles on a line sum to 180 degrees, prove that the vertical angles are congruent. w + x = 180 degrees (angles on a line sum to 180 degrees) x + y = 180 degrees (angles on a line sum to 180 degrees) Therefore, w + x = x + y subtract x from both sides: w = y Thus, vertical angles are congruent.
