The modern weapons of WW1 were more accurate, had greater range and provide a greater volume of fire than every before. Modern Industry had made it possible to create huge armies, and supply them, railroads had made it possible to move great numbers of people and volumes of supplies overland quickly. The military leadership took a great deal of time to adapt to these changes, the military structures were very reluctant to change military doctrine, and tried to force the technology to adapt to the old doctrine rather than to change the doctrine to match the technology. The last 2 years of the American Civil war had been fought in trenches. However the Americans had the advantage of greater space to troop density. This allowed for confronting armies to entrench in front of one another then to extend the flanks until one side was able to turn the flank of the other. Then the flanked army would withdraw a few miles and the whole process would begin again. In Europe it was the opposite, there were more troops than space, so the armies entrenched on the western front from Switzerland to Holland. On the eastern front the density was not so great and the armies still maneuvered. The Russian lacked the rail roads and logistical capablilites of the Germans. These changes moved part of the battlefeild to the industrial production. When maneuvers failed the idea arose that one side could bring victory by bein g more productive than the otherside. Technology caught the worlds armies unable to deal with the changes. Like to boxers forzen in a ring both just standing there hitting one another waiting for the other to get tired.
