if the left limit doesn't equal the right limit then the actual limit doesn't exist.
let me translate into symbols:
\[\lim_{x \rightarrow a^-}f(x) \neq \lim_{x \rightarrow a^+}f(x) => \lim_{x \rightarrow a}f(x) \text{ does not exist }\]
