Each letter of the alphabet is written on a different piece of paper. These pieces of paper are folded and kept in a bag. One folded paper is drawn at random from this bag. What is the probability of selecting a vowel or a letter from the word random? Hint: Determine if events happen at the same time.

OpenStudy (adamaero):

Total number of letters in alphabet? Number of vowels?

OpenStudy (adamaero):

You need that first.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

26 and 5 vowels but 6 if you count y.

jagr2713 (jagr2713):

Opps Sorry

jagr2713 (jagr2713):

the probability is the number of choices that match your criteria divided by the total number of possible choices. The total number of possible choices is the number of letters in the alphabet, = 26 now you need the number of letters that are either: 1) in the word "random" 2) is a vowel "a e i o u y" (y is sometimes a vowel, examples: thyme, dyne, windy, ...)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, would it be 5/26?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

*7/26
