Read the fable and use supporting evidence from the story to identify its theme. Answer in a minimum of three complete sentences.

One fine day in winter some Ants were busy drying their store of corn, which had got rather damp during a long spell of rain. Presently up came a Grasshopper and begged them to spare her a few grains, "For," she said, "I'm simply starving." The Ants stopped work for a moment, though this was against their principles. "May we ask," said they, "what you were doing with yourself all last summer? Why didn't you collect a store of food for the winter?" "The fact is," replied the Grasshopper, "I was so busy singing that I hadn't the time." "If you spent the summer singing," replied the Ants, "you can't do better than spend the winter dancing." And they chuckled and went on with their work.

It is basically a "work ethic" moral. The ant, who works diligently, can survive the hard times that eventually come. Those who ignore or put off preparing can be left with nothing when the time comes.

It also reflects on philosophy. It says that living the difficult life was worth it in the end, with the reward coming after a lifetime of hard work and sacrifice. It also reflects the attitude of charity since the ants help the grasshopper survive the winter (by giving advising it plan well in the future(sort of)).

The secondary lesson was applicable in the Dark Ages as well: harvest while you can with little rest or relaxation or you will be forced to rely on the kindness of others, who may or may not be able to help you survive.
