Find the difference between 13 7/8 ad 4 5/12

OpenStudy (paxpolaris):

\[13\frac78-4\frac5{12}\] ... what's the lowest common denominator ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4

OpenStudy (paxpolaris):

?? the LCM of 8 and 12...?

OpenStudy (paxpolaris):

would be 24, correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2424

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya 24

OpenStudy (paxpolaris):

so we get: \[13{21\over24}-4{10\over24}\]

OpenStudy (paxpolaris):

subtract the integer part separately , and the fraction part separately.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

33/24 - 106/24

OpenStudy (paxpolaris):

don't use improper fractions ... that makes it much harder... 13 - 4 is 9 ......... and 21- 10 = 11

OpenStudy (paxpolaris):

\[13\frac78-4\frac5{12} =\\ 13 {21\over24}-4{10\over24} =\\9{11\over24}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do we have to reduce that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or is it just 9 11/24?

OpenStudy (paxpolaris):

just that.
