Random home around the world are becoming death zones.
When someone enters those houses, they immediately collapse.
Government satelites are taking photographs of the patterns of these houses.
The pattern spells one word: leave.

well if they die instantly how would people investigate?

you don't investigate the houses themselves, I'm guessing then one house would not fit the pattern and then we find out that only people of some super rare blood type could enter the house or something along those lines.

I was thinking that you don’t analyze the houses themselves. The government analyzes photos of, say, a continent and finds hotspots of ‘death zones’. Also, what if you combined this idea and the child that comes for college idea?

Make it an historical mystery; like Atlantis or the death of Caesar that way there will be some truth to it and you can surprise the audience by revealing never before thought of protagonists and machinations. One of my novels is very much like this :D
