How many solutions does the equation |x + 7|= 1 have

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Well, what situation(s) make that true?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im not sure it was on my paper and i didn't get it at all.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

OK. Well, lets look a it as just a number. The definition of absolute value means that whatever is inside the | | you take the positive of, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yess right

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

So what number(s) could be in there and have it = 1? | ? | = 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0? im not sure how it works

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Well, what I am saying that if you have = 1, then what could be inside the absolute value signs? Just as a number or numbers. No x. Nothing else. What would it have to be?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OH 1!

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Or?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Nope. |2| = 1 is false.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

What about the negative side of things?
