Spartans halted the advance Xerxes long enough to allow Athens to bring its army into play. This was the most important action that ended Asian tyranny in the western world. The Roman games provided an outlet for the average citizen of the empire and kept them in check as often free bread or wine was served to them as well,as being a sign of status and power.

While SmartNah02 is technically right, Free Bread and Circuses wasn't for power, it was to control its citizens.
