What is the solution to the equation? 5(x + 4) - 4x = 18 - 23

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so do you know how to start?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, inside the parenthesis. (x + 4)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea but x and a number ( in this case 4) cannt add so you have to start some where else. do you see anything that can add together?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5 and 4.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well 18-23 on the right side of the equation works out nicly to get 5(x + 4) - 4x = -5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

next lets look at just 5(x + 4), I want you to expand this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

.. Like with Distributive property?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep
