Identify the following quantitative variables as discrete or continuous: Population in a particular area of the United States Weight of newspapers recovered for recycling on a single day Time to complete a sociology exam Number of consumers in a poll of 1000 who consider nutritional labeling on food products important

OpenStudy (anonymous):

had some trouble with these they kind of mean the same thing

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

discrete means there is a finite amount (ie a fixed number) you use discrete for counting things like number of people, number of cars, etc

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

continuous means that you can cut any number in half, thirds, quarters, etc this is useful for things like height, weight, time, etc

OpenStudy (slinley):
