solve. m^2-3=11m/2

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

m= -1/2 m= 6 It would be much easier for you to get an explanation, graph and solution for this if you used Wolfram Alpha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks but i need instructions on how to get the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

care to explain how you did it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@lizzy007 m^2 - 3 = 11m/2 simplify both sides m^2 - 3 = 11/2m subtract 11/2m from both sides m^2 - 3 - 11/2m = 11/2m - 11/2m m2 + -11/2m - 3 = 0 use quadratic formula with a = 1, b = -5.5, c = -3 m = -b+sqrt(b^2 - 4ac)/2a m = -(-5.5+sqrt((-5.5)^2 -4(1)(-3))/2(1) m = 5.5+sqrt(42.25)/2 m = 6, -0.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay but i have to complete the square to solve. how would i do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

your answer is m = 6, 0.5 it should solve it there
