why did the shogunates close japan ports and ban foriegn trade

by 1638 , they had closed japan's ports, banning most foreign travel and trade. the shoguns also stopped the building of large ships that could travel long distances. for more then 200 years, the Japenese would remain cut off from the outside world.this is not helpful at all
