basically the short answer is friction. long answer is when 2 surfaces rub together it causes both objects to create energy between them. Energy is the action that you are doing. friction is in direct response of the action. Once friction(the resistance of the 2 surfaces) is created, then heat will show its face as the outcome of friction.
