Why do Western Europeans generally have a higher standard of living than do Eastern Europe?

Western Europe is much more wealthy then the Eastern part. There isn't as much food shortages, poor, or bad living conditions. Many of them are used to that way of living, they naturally have a higher standard because it is standard normal to them. Many Eastern Europeans defect to America.
