welp, this is actually mflows older sister who happens to have a 4 year teaching degree. the subject is not dishes, dishes is the direct object just like bike was in the last sentence. remember? "Josh can ride his bike" josh is the subject and bike was the direct object of ride. ride what? bike. bike was not the subject.
Here, empty dishes is the same so the understood you is the subject. not dishes.
