Line of Demarcation

OpenStudy (andrewkaiser333):

The Treaty of Tordesillas (1494) established rights of exploration and colonization between Portugal and Brazil of "newly discovered lands" following the Atlantic voyages of Columbus. A north-south line about half way between the Cape Verde Islands (off the west coast of Africa, and occupied by Portugal since the 1420s) and the island of Hispaniola (claimed for Spain by Columbus 1492) was agreed between the 2 countries.Spain got everything to the west of the line, Portugal everything to the east. The Treaty was agreed to prevent conflict in the New World between Spain and Portugal.
