For English we have to respond to a question and I don't understand what it means by "How do stories indicate who people are, what they value, and what scares them?"

No idea what you're reading, but I am going to go on a limb here and say that the purpose of the question is probably to reason why people write the stories they do. After that, you can reason how their stories have affected them.
