Does a mercury barometer measure gauge or absolute pressure?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Most conventional barometers will give the absolute pressure. If you measure the pressure of a room, it will be about 1 atm. This is because the gauge pressure would be 0 (no difference between the atmosphere and itself) and the atmospheric pressure is 1 atm. Absolute P = Gauge P + Atmospheric P = 0 + 1 = 1
