So if you have 3 stanzas:

S3

You can do 1 and 2 or 2 and 3, but not 1 and 3. That is because 1 and 3 are not adjoining.

No, your works fine. The fact that you start wih some stanza and take the one below it is also a decent version of adjoining. It is all about them being connected or next to each other.
