It was cheaper and more affordable to run than the cars that preceded it were so it helped the general population get into cars. Before the Model T came along, cars were seen as more for only the wealthy and elite. Also, the employees at the Ford plants were paid $5 minimum a day for an 8-hour day starting in 1914. This more than doubled his employees earnings at the time (they made about $2.35 before he announced this). This was a very good wage for the time and was much higher than average for a factory worker during this time period. This was a huge deal because it meant that the employees that made the cars could actually afford the cars (something Henry Ford believed in). On a larger scale, it helped build the American middle class society.
