Help!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

help with what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If \[f(x)= x ^{2}-2x\] , find \[\frac{ f ( x+h) - f (x) }{ h }\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i don't know what any of that is because i am in 7th grade sorry

OpenStudy (triciaal):

in the function f(x) replace x with x + h

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so \[\frac{ (x+h) +h - (x+h) }{ h }\]

OpenStudy (triciaal):

you have x^2 - 2 x it becomes (x + h)^2 - 2(x + h)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\frac{ x ^{2}+ 2hx+ h ^{2}-2x-2h }{ h}\]

OpenStudy (triciaal):

do not divide by h at this point

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do i divide by?

OpenStudy (triciaal):

what we just did was to find f(x + h) the complete problem f(x + h) - f(x) then divide by h

OpenStudy (triciaal):

now substituting in the original f(x + h) = what you have for the numerator only f(x) = what was given f(x + h) - f(x) = and then divide everything by h
