You can multiply both sides of equation 1 by 3 to go from 3x-y=11 to 9x-3y=33

so we have this new system 9x-3y=33 5x+3y=9

in which when you add them together, you get this result 9x-3y=33 5x+3y=9 --------- 14x+0y = 42 so... 14x = 42 ---> x = ???
