At the time of the iconoclast controversy, the Great Schism hadn't happened yet and the fight over whether icons should be smashed or saved not only split opinions at the capital, but throughout the empire. Also, not only had icons, particularly in the East (the Byzantine Empire) become an important part of spiritual life, they were also big business for merchants and artists.

When Emperor Leo III sent men to remove an icon of Christ's image at one point, an angry mob killed the foreman in charge when they realized what was going on. Aside from the political problems this caused, theological divisions over topics like these would sow the seeds for more issues down the line - especially when icons were finally reinstated.
