Early guilds and modern unions served the same purpose: they offered a protective wall of support to its members. No matter what a member faced, whether it was being rejected for hire for no good reason, being unfairly treated, or being underpaid, all the "brothers" in the guild / union would fight for that member's rights. What one member fought for, all members fought for. However, there were many differences between early guilds and modern unions. Mainly, modern unions have enormous political power, and people today are more dependent on unions than they would imagine. For example, if the sanitation workers' union leaders call a strike, nobody's trash will be collected. If teachers believe they're underpaid, they'll go on strike, and the AFT will fight and argue on their behalf. Therefore, your teacher just wants you to look for similarities and differences between early guilds / unions, and modern guilds / unions. By the way, I noticed your list doesn't include the UAW (United Auto Workers). That's another very important union.
