When I mix aqueous potassium sulfite with nitric acid, will a reaction occur? If so, what will be formed? It has to be a gas, liquid (water), or a solid (a precipitate), I'm pretty sure. Does sulfurous acid count?

the sulfite ion will act as a base and accept protons, but it will decompose into \(SO_2\) and water
