$\dfrac{x^2-8}{x+6}$

$\dfrac{-2^2-8}{-2+6}$

Simplify Exponent:

$\dfrac{4-8}{-2+6}$

Subtract & Add:

$\dfrac{-4}{4}$

Simplify:

$-1$
