How do you know if an equation is open or not?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do u mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like 9p+8=10p+7. its asking me if its true, false, or open. so how do you know when an equation is open

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes it is open

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think that if its in brackets than the equation is closed otherwise open

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thanks (: so why is it open? @KissMyAxe

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Where do they ask these type of questions??? Is it in SAT maths?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha no its just a question that i have cause im confused @KissMyAxe

OpenStudy (aum):

9p+8=10p+7 subtract 9p: 8 = p + 7 subtract 7: 1 = p So there is only one value of p that satisfies the given equation. Therefore, it is a closed equation. An open equation has infinite number of solutions.

Thanks @aum

OpenStudy (aum):

You are welcome.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks so much @aum

OpenStudy (aum):

Glad to be able to help.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@diane96 forget whatever i said!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha well thanks anyways @KissMyAxe

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Pleasure :)

My answer above is based on the definition of open and closed equations I found here: http://openstudy.com/study#/updates/52371f3de4b0af32a079babf A general search on the web does not yield any useful info. I myself have not heard of this definition before. What is the definition given in your book / notes / teacher?
