Lava. Lava is the molten *precursor* to rock. Coal is a sedimentary rock, as is sandstone. Pumice is a highly vesicular (lots of holes) igneous rock. Lava is what comes out of volcanoes. It has all of the minerals that will eventually *make* an igneous rock when it cools, but it is not a rock until it cools, ceasing to be lava and becoming an igneous rock. Sometimes lava is referred to as "molten rock" but it is still not actually a rock type. Just the ingredients.
